Mystery and Wonder
The Time isn't anymore
for questioning how the Moon
stands there
nor how the Sun
heats the sky
or how there came civilization
Humankind has reached
touched Heavens
the Awe is less
than it has ever been
and children run computers
and every day see
foreign countries
the supernatural
made natural on TV
Mysteries are solved
that a century ago
were dream fare
Wonders are manageable
and tamed for our consumption
each day
As we eat the Universe
and soil our nest
we seek new wonders
perhaps the quark
the black hole
the stroke of an artist
We must make new mysteries
for our minds to eat
Neanderthals that were
and that we may be
we still must have reasons
to awake each day
reasons other than survival
of the body
Reasons for surviving
the mind
With mysterious
and wonderful newness
we must extend our sensibilities
because each new day
old Awe is less
While the days ahead close
around us
like darkened rooms
with heavy breathing
and wooden boxes
